Methadone Maintenance

Methadone maintenance treatment, a program in which opioid dependent individuals receive daily doses of methadone, was initially developed during the 1960s as part of a broad, multicomponent treatment program that also emphasized resocialization and vocational training.

Benefits of Methadone Maintenance

ARI offers methadone maintenance treatment as a part of a medication assisted treatment (MAT) model for opioid dependence.

MAT is the use of medications, in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies, to provide a whole-patient approach to the treatment of substance use disorders. Research shows that when treating substance-use disorders, a combination of medication and behavioral therapies is most successful.

Medication assisted treatment (MAT) is clinically driven with a focus on individualized patient care.

Understanding Methadone

Detoxification

This may be an appropriate option for individuals who have a shorter history of opioid dependence and little to no prior treatment.

The detox program is 180 days maximum. It is more rapid than the open-ended maintenance program.

General outpatient substance abuse counseling

This is offered to any individual with substance abuse or dependence issues, not just opioid dependent individuals. It consists of individual counseling, that will provide drug and alcohol education as well as relapse prevention education.

Intensive outpatient program - Coming Soon!

Intensive outpatient treatment is an intermediate level of care and is suited to meet a variety of patients needs:

  • An entry point into substance abuse treatment.
  • A step-down level of care for those individuals who are coming out of residential or inpatient care.
  • A step-up level of care for those individuals who are currently unsuccessful in outpatient care, methadone maintenance, or other community care.

Intensive outpatient treatment attempts to address the following general goals:

  • Achieving abstinence.
  • Fostering behavioral changes that support abstinence and a healthy lifestyle.
  • Facilitating active participation in community-based support systems (e.g., 12-step fellowship).
  • Assisting individuals in identifying and addressing a wide range of psychosocial problems (e.g., housing, employment, adherence to probation requirements).
  • Assisting individuals in developing a positive support system.
  • Improving individuals' problem solving skills and coping strategies.

This program provides frequent contact (3-4 evenings per week) and will continue anywhere from several weeks to several months, depending on the needs of the individual.
